Ayurveda is the sister science or lifestyle science of yoga. Developed more than 3,000 years ago, it is one of the worlds oldest healing systems practiced today. It sees health and wellness as a delicate balance between the elements. These elements are Kapha (water/earth), pita (fire), and vata (air/ether).
Vata is the driving force for all the elements. Associated with late fall to early winter, vata is both the life force and the energy of thought that moves in the space of the mind. Vata governs sensory, emotional, and mental harmony balance. When out of balance it can cause nervousness, anxiety, dry or chapped skin, light or uneasy sleeping, constipation, bloating, dislike of cold and wind, sensitivity to loud noises, spacey and scattered thoughts or feelings, excessive thinking or worrying.
In order to "Thrive Through Winter" we must look to our routines and create warmth and nourishment in our bodies. During this four-week series we will explore the elements and wisdom of Ayurveda to stay vital this season. We will study the dosha's (your constitution) for ideal seasonal routines, diet, yoga asana, behavior and use of our senses to calm and ground. This is a series to remind us that health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit.
