Nurture your innate compassion with the Loving-Kindness meditation, sometimes called “metta” meditation in Buddhism. Research suggests that this practice, done regularly, can increase feelings of connection, general satisfaction in relationships, and joy and can lower symptoms of anxiety and depression. The meditation is simple: a wish for the well-being of yourself and all the creatures of the Earth, repeated through this mantra:
"May you be safe.
May you be happy.
May you be healthy and strong.
May you live with ease.”
We’ll imagine different people in our lives from friends to acquaintances to strangers, sending them this prayer. And we’ll embody these words through gentle, repetitive movements that mirror the mantra, inviting compassion for self and others to become a part of our muscle memory.
