Wake up the body with movement. Inspire the mind with a teaching. Sit for ten minutes of silent meditation to create space and hold yourself with kind awareness as you move into your day.
For the next four weeks, we’ll turn to the Therigatha, a collection of poems by and about the first Buddhist women, the theris, or senior ones, nuns revered for their spiritual achievements.
Written down in 80 BCE, the Therigatha is the oldest anthology of women’s literature, documenting the lives of women over a thousand years ago who left their roles as daughters, sisters, mothers, and wives to follow the path of the Buddha. As Matty Weingast, one of their translators writes: “These women were doing much more than creating beautiful poetry—they were changing the world. Shaving their heads and putting on robes was not simply a sign of spiritual dedication. It was an act of revolution.”
Start your morning with their words and stories, and let their insight, as potent today as it was centuries ago, illuminate your practice.
We will read poems from different texts due to the complex nature of translation.
