Yoga Nidra

  • Joy of Yoga 8918 Manchester Road Brentwood, MO, 63144 United States (map)

Over the course of four weeks you are invited to explore and cultivate one or more sankalpas to assist you in bringing balance to your everyday lives. Each hour long class will begin with 25-30 minutes of gentle yoga to warm the body and yoke the mind, and end with a 25-30 minute yoga nidra. Should you desire you can sign up for all four or come and go as you like. All participants will receive the recording of the class that will be good for a week afterwards.

In today's world it's easy to feel pulled in a thousand different directions. Everywhere you look someone is telling you what to think or whom to believe. We are deluged by stimuli everywhere we go. Relaxation can be fleeting if it can be found at all. And even then, be it on the couch or an adult beverage after a long and hectic day, it doesn't feel like much when we wake up the next morning. We end up feeling scattered, unsure of much of anything.

Enter yoga nidra.

This "Sleep of Yoga" is a deep state of conscious relaxation, a state of complete effortlessness in breath, body and mind. 30 minutes of yoga nidra is equal to two hours of regular sleep. Some people say yoga nidra is a power nap you can take in the middle of a hectic day and be ready to finish the day as strong as you started.

The invitation of yoga nidra is simple--practice conscious relaxation in order to find balance in your life. But it is a practice that brings much deeper and lasting benefits as well.

When we place our consciousness in the space between waking and sleeping it becomes very receptive to intuitions from the unconscious mind.

It is a state that allows us to access the deepest parts of our core selves. Through the practice of yoga nidra we can begin to facilitate healing, transcend deep seated conditioning and beliefs, cutivate resolve to manifest intentions and even achieve spiritual awakening.

We can begin to discover who we are.

At the heart of yoga nidra is Sankalpa-resolve. It is a short mental statement made when the mind is calm and quiet at the start of yoga nidra and again at the end. It can begin to help us find our direction in the chaos and create an island of order to help keep us anchored.

The best part is that there is no wrong way to practice yoga nidra!

Yoga nidra is best done on an empty stomach, so if you attend live in-studio or via Zoom keep that in mind. Loose fitting clothing is best as well. And make sure that you are hydrated.
