Yoga for Bigger Bodies

This 6 week series will be an introduction to yoga for bigger bodies (Note: We will not meet on July 4th). Regardless of your size, shape or flexibility, yoga will meet you exactly where you are on your journey to balance and well-being. Yoga helps to create a compassionate mind and heart so that you can accept and embrace the beautiful and capable body you live in. Learn to move freely with confidence by letting go of the question “How should my body look in this pose?”, and start connecting to your inner awareness so you can ask yourself “How does my body feel in this pose?".

In this series, Bryna and Alison will teach you how to modify basic yoga postures to support your unique body by using the available props provided in any yoga studio. They will teach multiple variations for each posture, showing you how to make yoga safe and comfortable for your specific body type. You will learn how to connect to your body without judgement in a supportive and compassionate community of like bodied people.

We will integrate our movements with breathing exercises to empower you to move with confidence and purpose. Learn to cultivate patience for yourself while strengthening and stretching at your pace. We will take the time to personally assist each student for maximum comfort and encourage each practitioner to find their own expression in each yoga pose. This is an interactive workshop where we will have conversations about body positivity and self love. You will leave this class with a deeper appreciation of your body and all it can do, basic knowledge of yoga terms, postures, breath work, body awareness, meditation and the ability to make yoga work for you in any yoga class. Yoga Nidra

A state between waking and sleeping, yoga nidra is a practice passed down by ancient yogis as a means to dive into the subconscious and deepen inner awareness. Regular practice can boost creativity, shift responses to stress, regulate circadian rhythms, and offer blissful meditative oneness with the body, mind, and broader states of consciousness.

After a few minutes of gentle poses to relieve general stiffness and discomfort, students will relax lying down for approximately 30 minutes of yoga nidra. Guided instruction will include breath attention, body scanning, and guided visualization/meditation. This practice assists in releasing mental, emotional, and physical tensions, leaving you feeling tranquil, balanced, and refreshed.

Unlock Your Second Brain Series

When you think of your intuition, you might immediately go to your Third Eye. Yes, and while this is an important space for your guidance system, a large component of your intuition is in your belly. Your amazing, fantastic, wonderful belly. This is your gut instinct. When you have a gut reaction and feel it in your stomach. Your belly is your second brain. It will tell you if an important decision is right for you, what and how much you want to eat, and much more. Your belly is another space you can utilize to guide you more easily through life if you are listening to it.

Unfortunately, through societal norms and expectations, most of us have disconnected from our bellies and our second brain completely. This lack of communication causes us to miss out on many important signals and messages throughout the day.

In this 3-week series, we will utilize the tools of meditation and gentle yoga to reconnect to our bodies and bellies. After completing the series, you will feel more connected to your belly and will have a better understanding of your body and its messages. You will experience more love and appreciation for your stomach and you will gain tools and tips to support you in listening to your belly to help make decisions from your second brain.

Join us for support in raising your teen!

In this class, we will explore false beliefs about parenting and what the world tells us makes us a "good" parent. We will explore ways to connect with our inner wisdom to validate what we know to be true about these false beliefs (ex-The world tells us: my child must get good grades and get into a good college. Our inner wisdom tells us that the essence of who our child is has always been enough and will always be enough. His/her path may not mirror ours, and that is fine.)

Class will end with simple breathing techniques to connect and calm yourself outside of class. We'll also offer time for you to articulate in your journal your desires for your relationship with your teens.

Above all, this class offers you a space to feel heard and know that you are not alone. Plan to leave empowered by your ability to connect with your desires for your relationship with your teen.

A new session of Traditional Usui Reiki training Level 1 will begin at Joy Of Yoga July 20th, Fridays 12-2pm!

Reiki is a powerful healing technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered through the hands and is based on the knowledge that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and keeps us alive and well. When we're not feeling well, it can be caused by blockages in our flow of energy energy that become clogged or stagnant causing us to feel sick, imbalanced, overly emotional or stressed. Reiki works to clear and balance the energies of the body, bringing about profound physical, emotional, and spiritual changes in a person’s life.

During this 4-week course we will learn:

  • The background and history of Reiki
  • Basic Energy Healing concepts (what is energy? energy healing? auras? chakras? meridians?)
  • How Reiki Works (including specific scientific studies)
  • How to use Reiki to heal oneself
  • How to use Reiki to heal others (including animals)
  • Other fun and helpful uses for Reiki I healing

Reiki I is about self-healing and practitioners learn the basics of Reiki Healing.
Through the Reiki attunement process (passed on from teacher to student) we activate healing on every level.

What makes this course different than other Reiki Trainings?
* We allow more time to learn the information, practice, integrate the knowledge and adjust to the new vibration of energy. Many Reiki First Degree courses are taught all at once in one weekend, individually, or in 3 1-hour sessions, leaving minimal time to process the new information, ask questions, or receive guidance and additional feedback. This course is spread out over 4 weeks, and equals a total of 8 hours of training, so that at the end of the training all Reiki I practitioners feel confident in their ability to use Reiki energy to heal themselves and others.

* A strong emphasis is placed on hands-on practice. Students receive hours of experience in class and homework is given to practice between sessions.

* You will receive support in integrating this new Reiki energy. Receiving an attunement can bring up mild physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual shifts, that can at times feel uncomfortable or overwhelming. This is happening because your vibration is shifting, and you are releasing old habits and patterns that no longer resonate with your new vibration. The attunement is given during the 2nd class, so that students have support built into the class as they adjust to the new energy.

We emphasize spiritual growth and Reiki healing as a life-long pursuit, and provide many additional handouts, websites, organizations, and other resources for Reiki 1 students to access along the way. We also provide individual feedback and guidance throughout the training program.

Upon completing this training, you will have been trained in Traditional Usui Reiki First Degree (Reiki I), and receive your Reiki I attunement and certificate as a Traditional Usui First Degree Practitioner.

After completion of this course, you will have a strong foundation in Reiki healing. If you would like to further your self-healing and personal growth with Reiki, you can continue onto Reiki II, to be held in September/October and throughout the year!

What do you imagine when you think of a cleanse? Chances are you picture something harsh, restrictive, or super expensive. As it turns out, our bodies do an excellent job of detoxing on their own. However, sometimes it's important to take a step back from your day-to-day behaviors and make more informed decisions and create a closer connection to the reasons WHY you are eating.

This two-week cleanse is a holistic and gentle way to pay attention to your body and it's sensitivities. You will take time to slow down and hit the reset button. When we take time to be present, it causes a ripple effect to examine all of our relationships, not just the one with food.

During the two weeks you will steer clear of possible foods that can be causing your body dis-ease. The three biggest culprits have become staples of the Standard American Diet and we eat them all of the time without considering what they might be doing to our bodies. Our class will encourage you to listen to yourself and tweak and adjust as necessary. There is no wagon, so there isn't a wagon to fall off of! At the end of the program, you will be able to take what you've learned about yourself and use it to help navigate a way to maintain your renewed vibrancy. The final class will be held at Tower Grove Farmer's Market to inspire your journey forward into a more conscious relationship with food.

The first class will begin on July 21st from 9:30 to 10:30am at Joy of Yoga. The following class on July 28 will be held at the Tower Grove Farmer's Market.

Every student that registers will also be given a 30 minute one-on-one Nutritional Coaching follow-up session with April at an agreed upon date.

Esta clase esta diseñada para alinear el cuerpo y la mente a través de movimiento con la respiración. Estudiantes aprenderán las poses básicas de yoga y la importancia de la respiración consciente. La atención a conexión entre lo interno y lo externo son herramientas que los estudiantes pueden usar en la vida diaria.

[Join us for this beginners' class offered in Spanish. This class is designed to align the body with the mind through movement and breath. Students will learn basic yoga postures and the importance of mindful breathing. The attention to connection between the internal and external are tools that students can take into their daily life.]

Jazmin is a Puerto Rican native and St. Louis transplant. Often caught in two cultures throughout college, Jazmin noticed a lack of connection throughout the Latin American community. Her own desire for a better connection to her self allowed Jazmin to discover yoga as a wellness tool. After completing her 200-hour yoga teacher training in 2017 through Yoga Buzz, Jazmin saw the need for Spanish-speaking taught yoga that would both complement and empower her community. Jazmin hopes to work within the Latin American community to facilitate connection, understanding, and commitment to the mission of yoga for all! 

 

Jazmin nació en Puerto Rico y se mudo a St. Louis jovencita. Al sentirse entre medio de dos culturas durante los años de la universidad, Jazmin notó la falta de conexión en la comunidad latinoamericana. Su propio deseo de mejor conectar con ella misma guío a Jazmin a descubrir el yoga como herramienta de bienestar. Después de completar su entrenamiento de 200 horas para maestra de yoga en el 2017 a través de Yoga Buzz, Jazmin vio la necesidad del yoga enseñado en español que complementaría y empoderaria a su comunidad. Jazmín espera trabajar con la comunidad latinoamericana para facilitar la conexión, el entendimiento y el compromiso a la misión del ¡yoga para todos!

Ashley is an occupational therapist, lymphedema specialist, certified holistic lifestyle coach and Pilates instructor. Her favorite credentials are that of mom and wife. She has 2 beautiful children; a 16 month-old son and an angel baby daughter, born still at birth.

"My tribe is my inspiration. As an OT, I have experience with children, having worked in the St. Louis School District (pre-K to 8th grade) with focus on sensory integration, fine and gross motor, environment modification and developmental play. Currently, I work in the hospital setting, where I complete movement and self care assessments. I enjoy a holistic approach to health, using education as an empowerment tool for enhanced well-being. I find peace in practicing the arts of stillness, compassion and love.”

Loving our children IS enough! We will explore parenting from another angle, staying in the present moment amidst the fears and risks, learning to trust yourself, and finding the joy in all of it.

Reiki share, also known as a Reiki circle or exchange, is a gathering of like-minded people who participate in group healing treatments with each other. The main purpose for the Reiki share is to give and receive Reiki in a casual atmosphere of friendship, honor, positive energy and devotion.

Attending a Reiki Share is a fantastic way to meet other like-minded people who are interested in energetic healing. The basis of a share is so everyone attending can both give and receive Reiki healing in a supportive and loving environment. Reiki Shares provide energetic healing to people with little to no experience with Reiki as well as established Reiki Masters.

Our focus is to release the fascial layer, part of the soft connective tissue system, where much of our pain and tension lie. By releasing this layer of the body you can invite a sense of deep relaxation to restore and rebalance your nervous system. The Deep Tissue Release Class is designed to help you release every layer of your body, heart, and mind. Class will begin with a gentle flow yoga to prepare you for yoga ball-therapy work. Our focus is to release the fascial layer, part of the soft connective tissue system, where much of our pain and tension lie. By releasing this layer of the body you can invite a sense of deep relaxation to restore and rebalance your nervous system. All levels are welcome, yoga therapy balls will be provided for the duration of class. * Please note the balls are not recommended for bruised skin, broken bones, or osteoporosis.

21 Day Sugar Detox

This detox will be designed for vegans, vegetarians, and meat eaters!

Session Dates: 10/13, 10/20, and 10/27, 9:30am - 11:30am

Would you like to reset your eating habits? We know that losing weight and being healthier isn’t about simply about eliminating sugar, it’s about how you skillfully replace it. This is your chance to give your body a vacation from sugar, carbs and processed foods.

If you find yourself constantly pin-balling between hunger, eating and then hunger again, refined carbs and sugar may be part of the reason. Pastas, bread, chips and Oreos are all packed with calories and sugar and offer little fiber or real nutritional benefit. Studies have proven that when you consume sugar and refined carbs your body can’t use it is turned into fat. Not to mention, sugar is SUPER addictive. Worst of all, it's known to show up in foods you don’t expect and with names that only a scientist would recognize.

The good news is the longer sugar is out of your system the less you will crave it.

The first class will begin on October 13th from 9:30-10:30am. Two supplemental and optional classes will be held on the subsequent Saturdays and will cover topics like digestion, how to boost your immune system, and how to start adding healthy sugars back into your daily life. Most importantly, each week you will be supported by your fellow students and come home with new recipes and new ideas. The final class will celebrate your success and discuss how to incorporate all that’s been learned so that you are well prepared to stay healthy for the rest of the year.

Every student that registers will also be given a 30 minute one-on-one Nutritional Coaching session with April at an agreed upon date.

Mindfulness is a self-empowering, simple and practical way to help you be your best self more often. Over the last decade, mindfulness has gone from being perceived as a "woo woo" practice to an increasingly mainstream tool espoused in corporations across the globe. Finally now modern neuroscience can support what mindfulness practitioners have known for thousands of years - that mindfulness meditation physically develops our brain's capacity to be more compassionate, calm, happy and focused.

In this series you will learn practices to:

Develop your self-awareness and Emotional Intelligence

Wake up from the trance of thought to the life that is here

Develop acceptance of yourself just as you are

Work with difficult emotions and stress

Create space to shift from habitual negative reactions to responses that align with your values

Develop empathy and compassion

Wildwood Yoga and Joy of Yoga will be conducting a 200HR Registered Yoga Teacher Training and Immersion for anyone wanting to become a certified yoga teacher or those that would like to immerse themselves into their physical practice and understanding of yoga's history, philosophy and practical application in today's world.

What makes this Yoga Teacher Training distinctive is its ability to draw from a wide spectrum of yoga practices, philosophies and techniques. This training promises to deliver intellectually stimulating content, physically empowering practices, and spiritual connection through the cultivation of a daily sadhana practice. Physical strength and flexibility are not requirements to be a yoga teacher. The desire to better yourself and those around you are the requirements for this training.

This training is design to connect you to your inner teacher and guide. This is not a set of prescribed sequences that must be delivered with prescribed speech. It is a map to lead you to that inner wisdom and voice of the teacher within. Intuition, creativity, connection and thoughtful application are the cornerstones of the knowledge and teaching methods you will gain. Teachers will be asked to be accountable and to know why they are designing their classes with a specific sequence of poses, knowing that there is never just one way or one response, but that there is always an authentic and intuitive approach.

Jill Dunlap and Joy Page co-created the hatha based curriculum that will be the basis for this training. The curriculum emphasizes alignment, anatomy, philosophy and meditation.
Each weekend will incorporate
* 4 hours anatomy and physiology training hours by a physical therapist
* 6 hours of alignment based, in depth asana (yoga postures) training
* 3 hours of Teaching Methodology
* 5 hours of Yoga Philosophy
Processing through discussion as a group is part of every weekend.

Overall, each student will spend at least 10 hours teaching yoga during the training. Outside of the training, each student should expect to spend 2-3 hours per week on homework and attending classes.

Each weekend we will explore a different Hindu Deity. During that weekend we will weave the iconography, mythology, mantras and energy/role of that deity throughout the philosophy teachings, meditations and chanting.

Registration is open $500 non-refundable deposit due by Dec 1, 2018
$2800 total cost. Remaining balance due by Jan 15, 2019.

Offered with our 2019 Yoga Teacher Training Program is OPTIONAL training to become a Reiki Master with Sarah Buehner. The classes required to become a Reiki Master will be held in addition to and outside of the Teacher Training weekends. These sessions in their entirety will be an additional 20 hours. 

Familiarizing ourselves with the subtler components of energy anatomy enhances our ability to guide our students through the practice of yoga. Reiki is, at it's origin, a practice that began and developed in India. For this reason, it pairs nicely with and overlaps in many ways the practice of Yoga. Cost for Joy of Yoga teacher trainees for all 3 levels of Reiki attunements (Level 1 through Reiki Master) is $885.

Start your journey to your best-self with a bold statement: I don't want another diet.

Would you like to gain a whole new perspective on your relationship with food? Food (and the guilt/shame/rules that we have around it) take up mental space. This "diet mentality" creates mental, emotional and physical patterns ruled by anxiety and fear. Yes, food is our body’s fuel, but it is so much more. It gives us energy, affects our moods, and influences our relationship with ourselves and others. It is interwoven into our lives in every way.

Previously offered as a stand-alone workshop, this four-week series will delve deeper into the 4 Mindset Shifts that you need to ditch those negative behavior patterns and lead you toward your true vibrancy! Prior class attendance is not necessary.

The first class will begin on July 16th from 6:00 to 7:00pm. The following three classes will be held on the subsequent Mondays.

Ashley is an occupational therapist, lymphedema specialist, certified holistic lifestyle coach and Pilates instructor. Her favorite credentials are that of mom and wife. She has 2 beautiful children; a 16 month-old son and an angel baby daughter, born still at birth.

"My tribe is my inspiration. As an OT, I have experience with children, having worked in the St. Louis School District (pre-K to 8th grade) with focus on sensory integration, fine and gross motor, environment modification and developmental play. Currently, I work in the hospital setting, where I complete movement and self care assessments. I enjoy a holistic approach to health, using education as an empowerment tool for enhanced well-being. I find peace in practicing the arts of stillness, compassion and love.”

Loving our children IS enough! We will explore parenting from another angle, staying in the present moment amidst the fears and risks, learning to trust yourself, and finding the joy in all of it.

During this 4-week course we will learn:

-How Reiki Works (including specific scientific studies)

-How to use Reiki to heal oneself

-How to use Reiki to heal others (including animals)

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a powerful healing technique, that can help to bring about profound physical, emotional, and spiritual changes in a person’s life. Reiki I practitioners learn the basics of Reiki Healing, as well as how to perform self-healing and heal friends/family members and animals. You will learn basics of clearing energy in rooms, food, crystals and other objects. Each Reiki Attunement increases the person’s energy vibration, allowing for more profound healing abilities.

Who can learn Reiki?

Anyone who wants to practice self-care

Those who want to begin or further their spiritual development

Anyone who experiences a lot of stress, anxiety, chronic pain, physical ailments/illness, spiritual blocks, or is around intense/negative energy

Those who want to help heal animals

What makes this course different than other Reiki Trainings?

We allow more time to learn the information, practice, and integrate the knowledge and adjust to the new vibration of energy. Many Reiki First Degree courses are taught all at once in one weekend, individually, or in 3 1-hour sessions, leaving minimal time to process the new information, ask questions, or receive guidance and additional feedback. This course is spread out over 4 weeks, and equals a total of 8 hours of training, so that at the end of the training all Reiki I practitioners feel confident in their ability to use Reiki energy to heal themselves and others.

A strong emphasis is placed on hands-on practice. Students receive hours of experience in class and homework is given to practice between sessions.

You will receive support in integrating this new vibration of energy. Receiving an attunement can bring up mild physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual shifts, that can at times feel uncomfortable or overwhelming. This is happening because your vibration is increasing, and you are releasing old habits and patterns that no longer resonate with your new vibration. The attunement is given during the 2nd class, so that students have support built into the class as they adjust to the new energy.

Additional Resources for Spiritual Development & Reiki Healing. We emphasize spiritual growth and Reiki healing as a life-long pursuit, and provide many additional handouts, websites, organizations, and other resources for Reiki 1 students to access along the way. We also provide individual feedback and guidance throughout the training program.

Upon completing this training, you will have been trained in Traditional Usui Reiki First Degree (Reiki I), and receive your Reiki I attunement and certificate as a Traditional Usui First Degree Practitioner. Attendance to each session is required to receive Reiki I certificate.

After completion of this course, you will have a strong foundation in Reiki healing. If you would like to further your self-healing and personal growth with Reiki, you can continue onto Reiki II, to be held in July/August and throughout the year!

Do you ever wonder what it would be like to feel less scattered, fragmented and stressed? To move through your busy life with more flow and ease? If you are feeling overwhelmed, stressed out or even apathetic, chances are you are experiencing imbalance. Often when we think about not having balance in our life, we immediately think of external circumstances like how much or little time we have, our workload, what others are or are not doing, etc.. While all these external factors impact our sense of feeling balanced, in order to get to the source of the imbalance we need to turn our attention deeper to our MindBodySpirit connection.

The interconnectedness of our mind, body and spirit occurs in a subtle realm. Often it is challenging to get in touch with ourselves at a subtle level. Themind, body and spirit are all made of and interconnected with one thing-Energy. Everything in this universe is made of energy, including us! We keep trying to manipulate the outside world to make things more balanced and enjoyable. We push and pull, change our schedule, our weight, our job, our relationships, drink more wine, or buy more things all in hopes of finding that internal, yet illusive feeling of peace and balance we desire.

And it NEVER works for long. As most of us experience in life, no matter what we seem to do, there is always SOMETHING going on that causes friction, stress or some level of tension in our life. Often we feel we are repeating the same darn story over and over just with new people.

It wasn’t long until she realized that the practice was moving off of her mat and starting to transform her life. Keri became clear that yoga had become her calling, her dharma. In 2012 she took the plunge from corporate America to full time yogi and devoted all of her time to studying, practicing and teaching. Keri is a 500-hr RYT specializing yoga therapy, psychology, and neuroscience.

Her classes are spiritual in nature and are designed to have a strong emphasis on the mind, body and breath connection. Keri’s classes are challenging, heartfelt, fun and allow for greater physical and spiritual development. Herbalism is defined simply as “the study of botany and use of plants intended for medicinal purposes or for supplementing a diet.” To practitioners though, herbalism extends to mental and spiritual health, nourishing and balancing the whole person.

In this workshop, we will learn how to reconnect with the cycles of the earth and ancient healing practices by learning about different, common herbs that can have meaningful and lasting effects on your health and well being.

In this offering, we will work together as a group to learn about plants, herbalism, and personal wholeness.

All experience levels are invited.

Our text will be Healing Wise by Susun S. Weed. Reading the book is not required, though encouraged.

We will discuss various healing traditions and structures and explore how these may fit within the context of our lives. We will spend time in the classroom learning about different herbs using this text, then apply what we have learned in a guided hike and plant collection trip, separate and optional from this offering.

The Empowered Empaths Circle is a healing space for people who identify as empaths or otherwise sensitive to the energy of others & the world around them.

Not sure if you fit this description, but feeling a little overwhelmed about world events, others' problems, or the future? Then this group is definitely for you!

Many people who are sensitive to energy can become easily overwhelmed without energy-managing techniques. As a result, many unbalanced energy-sensitive individuals struggle socially, physically, emotionally, or mentally. Mismanaged energy can lead to physical illness, relationship problems, or mental health issues.

Many empaths and others sensitive to energy also feel isolated and alone, which is one of the main reasons the Empowered Empaths Circle was created!

In addition to learning concepts and techniques for managing energy, the empowered empaths circle is also a space for group members to give and receive support to one another about topics and questions related to being sensitive to energy.

Although it can feel like a burden, it is a gift to be sensitive to energy! We are here to help bring awareness to the world around us. In this circle, you can learn ways to clear, rebalance, and enjoy your ability to be sensitive to energy.

The Empowered Empath Support Group is facilitated by Sarah Buehner, who, in addition to identifying as an Empath, Highly Sensitive Person, and Indigo, is also a practicing energy healer, psychic/medium, and mental health counselor. Join Joy for this information session where we'll dive into this deep and ancient pool of wisdom. Ayurveda is the sister science to Yoga and is translated as the 'Science of Life'. It has been used over the last 5000 years in India to create balance and health in body, mind and spirit. We will learn our Ayurvedic Prakriti or Dosha (vata, pitta or kapha?) and learn Ayurvedic practices and foods for balancing your dosha.

According to Ayurveda, the goal is not just a high functioning physical body, but a mind and spirit to match. As we accumulate stress in our modern lives, we get tired and our digestion slows down, we battle mood, our energy wanes, aging and a multitude of physical ailments keep us from realizing our spiritual nature. The body becomes dense, heavy and non-responsive tethering us to a dull state of being and thinking. We will learn ways to lighten the load, feel energized and whole.

Much of the information widely accepted in Ayurveda for thousands of years has only very recently been proven by modern science! The ancient seers and rishis were so attuned to their physical bodies it is truly astounding to contemplate how they could have been so acutely aware of the most subtle aspects of being. Their knowledge will amaze you!

The goal of Ayurveda is to remove the density of the physical body and restore optimal physical health so that we can gain mental and spiritual clarity. Joy and equanimity is our birthright! Feeling good is something each of us has access to each and every day.

Calling all Reiki I practitioners! Are you ready to take your Reiki practice to the next level? Join us for a 2 week Traditional Usui Reiki Level II Intensive Training!

In this Reiki II workshop, we will cover the following:

-A review of self-healing, healing others, and Reiki I basics

-Reiki Symbols, what they are, and how to use them

-Distance healing—healing across time and space

-Intuitive/psychic development with Reiki, as well as working with Reiki guides

-Advanced Reiki/energy healing techniques and information for individuals considering a Reiki healing career.

And of course, you will receive your Reiki II attunement!

All class participants are required to have Reiki level I Training & attunement to participate.

Additional details:

This training is made up of two 4-hour classes on Friday afternoons for a total of 8 hours. Cost is $295 person.
